  6. mandarin. British and American journalism, however, have 
  7. always tended to exploit the mosaic form of the newspaper 
  8. format in order to present the discontinuous variety and 
  9. incongruity of ordinary life. The monotonous demands of the 
  10. literary community‚Äîthat the newspaper use its mosaic form to 
  11. present a fixed point of view on a single plane of perspective‚Äî
  12. represent a failure to see the form of the press at all. It is as if 
  13. the public were suddenly to demand that department stores 
  14. have only one department.
